sevensevenseven #9
featuring high., jobber, shep treasure, ruth in the bardo, tanukichan, lily seabird, doused, taraneh + im hosting dba james day off on 5/18!!
Hey everyone, it’s been a minute! I’m feeling inspired by the music I’ve been seeing lately and getting the same sort of feeling I got last summer when I started writing this thing. It’s nice to stumble upon new communities within “The New York City Music Scene,” meet new people and discover new bands. It’s been one of the best parts of hosting these shows with James and it’s bittersweet that I’m hosting the last one on 5/18 at Heaven Can Wait with Middle Part and Couch Prints! There are still some tickets available here, stay tuned for updates for more sevensevenseven shows as I have some stuff in the works!
SEVEN SHOWS YOU NEED TO SEE
5/11 Kill Alters, Deli Girls, Murder Pact at Brooklyn Monarch - Even if you just read the names of the bands on this bill, you know this show will be insane. I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve seen Deli Girls on a lineup and maybe this will be the time I make it out to a show.
5/13 Blue Ranger, Brody Price, Lily Seabird at Sultan Room - I recently found out about Lily Seabird through doing some digging into the Burlington music scene, which is blossoming and worth checking out if you haven’t gotten into it. Shoutout Molly who puts me on everything good up there. Excited to make the pilgrimage to Radio Bean this summer, but until then we’re lucky enough to be graced by some of Burlington’s finest at Sultan Room this weekend.
5/13 High., All Under Heaven, Doused, Sovnya at Saint Vitus Bar - I keep missing All Under Heaven every time they play NY, so I can’t wait to see them this weekend. I can’t wait to finally see Doused too, Alicia put me onto them and they’re so sick.
5/15 Shame, Been Stellar at Irving Plaza - Been Stellar is coming home, I’ll see you there!
5/16 Taraneh, Trinket, Starcleaner Reunion at Sundown - I saw Taraneh at Brooklyn Monarch earlier this year before Lucy and I’m so glad I caught her set. She’s hypnotic on stage and I think she’ll completely own Sundown by the time she’s done with it.
5/17 Mo Troper, 2nd Grade, Jobber at Sultan Room - As you’ll read below, I recently saw Jobber at The Broadway and they blew my mind. They’ll be at Sultan Room next week opening for Mo Troper alongside 2nd Grade (another great Philly rock band) so don’t miss it.
5/18 dba James, Middle Part, Couch Prints at Heaven Can Wait hosted by sevensevenseven - buy tickets here while you can!!!
SEVEN SHOWS YOU WISH YOU WENT TO
3/24 Show Me The Body at Brooklyn Steel - The first time I ever saw Show Me The Body, I was 18 years old. Monica (the world's biggest Iceage fan) convinced me to spend $12 on Stubhub to see Iceage at Music Hall of Williamsburg with her and the opener was Show Me The Body. I don’t think I fully appreciated the show at the time, but always remembered SMTB as the band that didn’t kick me square in the jaw that night, which was really appreciated. It’s wild to see a band grow from an opener to a sold-out Brooklyn Steel headliner. They’ve built such a strong community in NY and this show didn’t disappoint. Malena and I were in disbelief for pretty much the entire show. Before the show, we were outside in the smoking section talking to Gia, who flew out from Puerto Rico just for the show, so we missed the guy who breathed fire during Jesus Piece’s set, but I wish we saw that. I think about it most days. Every time someone stole the mic and knew all the words, we were shocked. It was one of the coolest things ever and it was special to be there for their homecoming.
3/25 Enumclaw at Elsewhere Zone One - At SXSW 2022, I stayed behind at Cheer Up Charlie’s to see Enumclaw indoors while mostly everyone went to the British Embassy showcase to see Just Mustard. Best decision ever. I feel like anyone could see Enumclaw and be converted into a fan. When you have a bassist like that, who moves like that, and songs about wishing and dreaming… anyways. This show was really fun, Nitefire opened and I’m surprised that people who live and die for glamourous downtown rock haven’t embraced them yet. Hotline TNT did a song mid-set, the world record for the amount of guitars in a building might have broken.
4/12 World’s Worst, Bedridden, Jobber at The Broadway - World’s Worst from Salt Lake City is probably the first, only, and best band from Salt Lake City I’ve ever heard. Their self-titled debut album came out earlier this year and it’s a record that digs deep further into the 90s alt-rock renaissance going on, into Dino Jr, Fuel, Idaho territory. I love a sort of monotone deep vocal alongside a packed pedal board. They rocked The Broadway alongside Bedridden and Jobber, who I think are two of the NYC bands I listen to the most. I love a band that builds a universe around their songs and the wrestling of it all when it comes to Jobber gives me a narrative to hinge my whole experience on. It’s a rare thing for smaller bands to do, but it’s a great way of connecting. I love the sample tracks they play throughout the set too. Bedridden was great too, they tore through the songs on their Amateur Heartthrob EP. They’ve come into their own since I saw them last summer at The Gutter and I think there’s a lot more to come.
4/14 A Country Western, Ruth in The Bardo at The Broadway - I’m getting better at going to shows alone, especially when you’re forced to because you can’t find anyone who is free to go and you can’t stop listening to “Crossing out My Lines.” I’m really glad I ended up going though because I discovered Ruth In The Bardo, who are probably my favorite band I’ve discovered all year. Self-described as “southern baptist transcore” from the new capital of rock music, Philadelphia, they absolutely shred. There’s an urgency and fearlessness to their songs that completely fills up the room and demands your attention. I really want to see them again and I hope they come back to NY soon. It’s hard to follow something like that up, but A Country Western brought it too. Another band with a great bassist, they have these sticky melodic rock songs that make you just want to jump around.
4/26 Shep Treasure at Pianos - In all my years, I have never been to Pianos. I didn’t expect it to be a chic little LES bar, for some reason I expect a gimmicky piano aesthetic. They make a really good Shirley Temple and booked Shep Treasure, so I can’t really be mad. I first saw Shep Treasure open for Charlie last year at The Broadway and have kept up with them since then. Sabrina's effortlessly cool and sweet music is hard to forget. Their set was hypnotic, you can easily lose yourself in the humming of their guitar riffs and the stories within the songs. Definitely don’t miss them next time they play NY and check out their new album, 500 dead or alive.
5/2 Tanukichan, Winter at Baby’s All Right - Tanukichan is someone I was late to the party on, but I’m so glad Blakely finally made me listen to “Hunned Bandz” last year, which is one of those songs that you need to listen to 2493 times when you first discover it. Her new album GIZMO feels the same way to me, I like how she ventures into a certain dreaminess through her music but keeps you grounded through rhythmic guitar parts. It’s the perfect combination. Her set was the same way, it was great to watch her rock out even while the music made me feel like I was on cloud 9. Winter was great too, another artist that has mastered the dream pop shoegaze combo.
5/5 High., Glixen, Lola Star at The Broadway - I just got home from this show, and what a lineup. Out-of-town Julia’s War bands will certainly bring a lot of people to The Broadway. Glixen packed out of the room with their swirling songs, giving us all a preview of what’s to come in addition to powerful singles like “Moodswing.” It was great to finally see Lola Star and High. too, “Waiting” has been one of my favorite songs of the year. High. makes me believe in grunge rock again, their songs are dynamic and relentless in the best way. Their music manages to shimmer while remaining heavy and grounded, which feels rare in a world where most bands are choosing to just be one thing.
