sevensevenseven #12
featuring disq, kitchen, hooky, computerwife, temple of angels, cry baby and more
I am again writing to you all after weeks of not doing so as I often do. I get busy, I get sick, I get tired. But I wanted to tell everyone about some stuff I’m excited about, especially as we are on the brink of 1 year of sevensevenseven. I’m really good at planning when it comes to certain things, but I certainly fall flat when the only person relying on me is myself or else I would’ve done something. I’m nothing but honest with you guys, probably to a fault… anyways! I realized recently I haven’t been to 7 shows which I wrote you last, which sounds insane if you’re me, but it’s been sort of a slow summer. The bands I have seen though, for work or for fun, have been amazing. This includes peers like Sub*T, May Rio, Brunch, TAGABOW, all under heaven, Catcher, Waveform*, Shep Treasure, Toner, They Hate Change, and Push Ups. I love them all, but also to see legends like Le Tigre, Altin Gün, Guided by Voices, The Hold Steady, and Peaches has been just fucking cool and fulfilling.
However, I need to tell you how much fun the first sevensevenseven show was. I am a person who lives in my own head instead of in reality so of course I didn’t really expect people to show up, but they did and it was just a night of fun with pure intent. A lot of my friends came out, a bunch of people I hadn’t seen in a while, one of my all-time favorite interns Patrick, and all of my favorite bands played. It was like a dream birthday party but it wasn’t my birthday, it was Mila’s birthday though! Shep Treasure made people cry, Push Ups made people jump, and people from Scotland came to see all under heaven. It was so epic and inspiring. Shoutout to Alicia for helping me put everything together and to Jade and Grace for being my emotional support animals that day and going to Party City to pick up huge 777 balloons. I have some of the best friends!
Back to business though… here are some things I’m looking forward to and songs I love. Keep sending things to 777newmusic@gmail.com because I love reading your notes!
SEVEN SHOWS YOU NEED TO SEE
8/9 Hooky, Yung Sham, Bedridden, Sean Henry, Shep Treasure at The Broadway - This is the event of the month I think. 5 bands on a weekday and it starts at 8pm? Few are this brave and few lineups are good enough to get away with something like this. I’m excited to see Hooky, Yung Sham, and Sean Henry for the first time and I’m always psyched to see Bedridden and Shep Treasure. See you there.
8/13 Sloppy Heads, Lefty Parker, Kitchen at Union Pool - The rumor is that this is the last Kitchen show in NYC for a minute so you probably shouldn’t miss it. I had never heard of The Sloppy Heads or Lefty Parker before this show got announced but Lefty Parker is the kind of songwriter I haven’t had the pleasure of hearing in a while. Sloppy Heads also brings me out of my comfort zone, to a place where 60s rock meets lofi indie. This will be a lowkey but special night, like most nights at Union Pool.
8/15 Disq, Graham Hunt at Elsewhere Zone One - I first found out about Disq when they opened for shame in 2019 and they seemed like one of the first good successors for the American indie rock dynasty. I think this still rings true, especially after the release of last year’s Desperately Imagining Someplace Quiet. I still remember when I listened to it the first time, in a WeWork, just so excited to have my hands on it. One thing that is really cool about this record is that each of the 4 band members wrote and did vocals for 3 songs each, adding up to 12 songs that are so uniquely Disq but distinguishable from one and other. The more time I spend with this album, the more I love it, and I can’t wait to see it live. Graham Hunt, another Wisconinite, is opening the show and they just released an epic single called “Emergency Contact” on Smoking Room. Don’t miss this one!
8/16 Computerwife at Baby’s All Right - Anything released on Danger Collective Records is usually good, especially when it’s Computerwife’s selftitled record that came out last week. I first saw Computerwife when she played along with Sub*T, Dino Boy, and Been Stellar at Elsewhere in 2021 and since then she’s only gotten better and better. The album captures life at this moment in time for a generation of 20 somethings in Brooklyn while also maintaining a completely unique identity. It’s filled with collaged sounds and moments of reality, an album no else could possibly make. The record release show is next week at Baby’s with Downgrade and Shower Curtain, it’ll be a show not to miss.
8/18 Temple of Angels. Lathe of Heaven, True Body at Union Pool - Temple of Angels was a band I was late to the party on, only recently finding out about them this year after Yasi Salek tweeted about crushed and I read this Dazed profile about how Bre Morrell was also in a project called Temple of Angels. Listening to them for the first time was a moment of like, “Why the fuck did no one tell me about this?” They sound like The Sundays got heavier guitar pedals and lived in Los Angeles, which results in a sound that I’m obsessed with. Their debut record, Endless Pursuit, came out on Run for Cover last month and it’s hard to turn off. Lathe of Heaven and True Body are opening this one up, balancing out the night with their harder approaches to rock.
8/22 + 8/23 Alex G, Alvvays, Tanukichan at Prospect Park - I had to include the indie superbowl of August. The fact that they added Tanukichan to these shows is straight up insane. I’m excited to see Alex G again after a tease of a set at Bonnaroo and same with Alvvays, who I saw a bajillion years ago at Boston Calling as a teenager. This is something I bought tickets for when it went onsale, which is a rarity, and that alone should speak volumes to you.
8/24 Crybaby, Push Ups at NuBlu - Cry Baby is so back! So stoked to see Joey and his band (Alex, Carter, Josh, Matthew) Cry Baby kill at NuBlu later this month, alongside the always amazing Push Ups and DJ UCarly. Their recent single “Hollister” features newly inducted lead singer Alex and it’s a song that hooks you right in from the beginning, bringing you fully into the nostalgic world of Cry Baby. This song should’ve been in The O.C.. Can’t wait to hear what else they’ve been working on! This interview with Gomi Zhou got me really excited. I hear there’s a new single coming out next week that you can presave here…
