I love when you’re reading an interview with an artist and the journalist asks them who they’re listening to. It’s important to pay attention to who your favorite artists are listening to because they can really put you on and that’s why I’m soooo thrilled with today’s issue of sevensevenseven. We have been graced with recs from dba James, Middle Part, and Couch Prints (+ me and Andrew!), who are all playing the last day off at Heaven Can Wait tomorrow night along with Octogon on the decks. It’s a bittersweet moment; tomorrow night is going to be a ball but I’m sad it’s the last one! Anyways, here’s what we’ve been seeing and listening to…
SEVEN SHOWS YOU NEED TO SEE
5/18 dba James, Middle Part, Couch Prints, Octogon at Heaven Can Wait hosted by sevensevenseven - Psyched to be hosting the last day off at Heaven Can Wait tomorrow night! Last few tickets here! - Kenzie
5/19 Noah Kesey at Windjammer - I found out about Noah Kesey earlier this year via his Julia’s War single “Elephant” which of course ended up on repeat for a while. He surprise dropped his latest album Guitar Music on Bandcamp recently on a random Saturday and threatened to remove it so I bought it for safekeeping. It’s a collection of songs that encapsulates the wide range of genres that guitar music, just a really beautiful collage of music that I’ve loved listening to lately. Another Burlington artist to watch, he’s playing Windjammer on Friday and I’m hoping to catch his set. - Kenzie
5/20 Richie Quake at Heaven Can Wait - Richie’s record he’s waterfalling right now might be his best output thus far. Watching these songs translate live is massive; I’ve been following him closely for years, especially his “real life” residency at Heaven. If you haven’t caught him yet he deserves your eyes because he’s integral to what’s happening in the NYC scene currently. - Middle Part
5/25 Anna Shoemaker, Charlotte Rose Benjamin at NuBlu - Anna played on the last Day Off! Show with me and her set is one of my favorites that I’ve gotten to see all year. It was a ton of fun to get to play our duet together that we had just written only a couple of weeks prior. I’m super excited for her headline show next Thursday and she’s been teasing that there’s another special announcement that I think is dropping today! - dba James
5/31 The Hellp with Instupendo at Bowery Ballroom - I saw The Hellp for the first time at SXSW early this year for the Perfectly Imperfect party. Their set had a bunch of technical difficulties and zero sub bass so I’m excited for a second try. They have some great songs and I love that they do live synth sequencing and don’t (seem to?) use tracks. I like that song Cinderella by Instupendo and I hope he plays it so I can sing along. - Brandon from Couch Prints
6/14 MONS VI, Middle Part, Long and PRY at The Broadway - (Shameless self promotion) I curated this bill of homies and new bands that I think are going to be something special within the next year or so. It’s always weird going to a show where nobody clearly knows each other and nobody shows up. I think it’s easy to read through a scene that isn’t thoughtful and being intentional with your community is the only way to cultivate something real. Keep it on your radar. - Middle Part
6/6 Bully with special guest at Racket - I’ve been a big fan of Bully’s music ever since she put out her S/T EP. She’s one of those rare artists where every record is better than the last and her new single “Days Move Slow” I think is one of her best songs yet. I have yet to see her live but with a special guest supporting, this is a must-see for me. - dba James
SEVEN SHOWS YOU WISH YOU WENT TO
2/26 Evan Stephens Hall (of Pinegrove), Allegra Krieger, Blaketheman1000 at Mercury Lounge - Blaketheman1000 opened up for the singer of Pinegrove at Mercury Lounge in February which might be the most polarizing bill I’ve ever seen, and I wish I could have caught it. Pinegrove has been a big influence on me while writing our new record and Blaketheman1000 is so clearly self-realized. I'm a big fan of his art and performances. - Middle Part
4/11 Sword II at The Broadway - My favorite show as of recent was seeing Sword II at The Broadway in April. They're based in Atlanta, but touring around and definitely a must-see this summer. Their energy onstage is addicting to watch. So raw, so much fire. Found them because we were on a bill together in Texas, so stoked to connect with such kind talented peeps. - Jayanna from Couch Prints
4/21 Tony World at Mehanata - I also wish I had caught the TONY OR TONY party last month. Their music is rejuvenating and their parties look like a blast. Shout out to big money (Baxter Barber) for having sick taste. Not many managers/talent scouts out there have their finger on the pulse like Bax; I’d go see anything he puts on. - Middle Part
4/29 Hotline TNT at Baby’s All Right - My bestie Maria plays guitar in that band and there's just an incredible buzzing energy to their live show. Can't wait for their next album release but they're playing a bunch so def check it out if you haven't. - Jayanna from Couch Prints
5/5 Sugar Pit at MakeOutMusic - I was just in LA and I got to see Sugar Pit at MakeOutMusic. Love the new spot that they have out there (it’s basically a mirror image of the last space, still in the same apartment complex!) It was so cathartic to see the song “Customer Service” live since it’s been all over my Tik Tok feed nonstop for a while. Kian is also super nice and the new song he debuted may be one of my new favs, I keep listening to the iPhone video I took of it but I think it’s coming to Spotify pretty soon - Andrew Moltz
5/14 Embaci, Joanne Robertson at Union Pool - I didn’t know Union Pool was a venue. My only perspective on it was from this guy I used to live in an Airbnb with who called it Euro Pool because he went there to pick up European women. We played there a month ago and I found its showroom to be a lovely space: it’s intimate and looks like the Mr. Brightside music video. Embaci opened with an extremely beautiful series of original songs and a Hope Sandoval cover. Joanne Robertson played her trademark folk-songs-in-the-marianas-trench from a notebook she had on stage. I kept peeking at her tuner pedal to see what she was playing in. There were so many different tunings that I forgot all except one: DCGFAD. - Brandon from Couch Prints
5/14 Mariah Houston, Sleep Habits, Shep Treasure, People I Love at Rubulad - I love going to a show intending to see one band and walking away as a fan of another. Grace, Jade, and I showed up to Rubulad a bit before Shep Treasure’s set and caught Mariah Houston and Sleep Habits. They just released a split EP together called Trinkets and Horses and it’s a really beautiful, introspective collaboration. “Backseat” was the song that struck me most during the set and it’s stuck in my head now. I bought a keychain from them that says both “Fuck Shoegaze” and “I Love Music,” which is one of my new favorite pieces of merch. Shep Treasure played last and killed it as always, so special to see Sabrina’s mom singing along throughout the set. - Kenzie
SEVEN SONGS YOU NEED - 7* by dba James - comes out tonight at midnight, pre-save here! - dba James
My Life As A Teenage Loser by Eera - This song is truly wonderful. It’s like if Disney Channel made a Pi’erre Bourne beat. I see my childhood and my future child’s childhood when I listen to it. I sent it to my closest companion (Iain) and wrote, “This is what our friendship sounds like.” - Brandon from Couch Prints
Maybe Love by Maz - I’ve been obsessed with “Maybe Love” by Maz. She’s a 20-year-old Utah-based artist that’s severely underrated. Her music is the pinnacle of what indie sleaze wants to be with production reminiscent of Ratatat and YYY. Her voice sends me straight back to 2010, and you can tell through her lyrics that she's really saying something important which is so refreshing. She’s most definitely an artist you need in your life or you’re missing out. - Middle Part
Sword by Ana Roxanne - I've been a fan of Ana Roxanne's atmospheric, divine music for a while and she started this new project with DJ python~Natural world beauty concept. Ana Roxanne's voice & music goes so hard it’s so awesome to hear her world expand with this new sound. - Jayanna from Couch Prints
Dumber by Celia - dba James
Oh Shut Up by Keegan Konsor - “Oh Shut Up” by Keegan Konsor has been a repeater for me lately. His unique approach to music and our scene is something that hasn’t been done quite correctly yet. I think he’s gonna create a real community around him by literally having his own lane. I love Keegan’s music; it walks this tightrope between vaporwave, big beat (The Prodigy), and midwest emo that feels new and not regurgitated. His presence is something not from this earth and deserves to be celebrated. I’m a massive fan, and you should definitely have him on your radar. - Middle Part
Stoner Kissing Trance by So Klarity - My friend showed me So Klarity kinda recently & ever since it has been on repeat. They have one EP on Spotify called Volume 1, specifically “Stoner Kissing Trance” is delish. I guess it was released a year ago but that's still pretty new to me lol, but it's just so sexy to me. I love it and can't stop listening. - Jayanna from Couch Prints
wonder if u care by flyingfish - dba James
As always, invite me to your shows and send me your music! See you tomorrow night!
Love,
Kenzie
